The program consists of over 200 hours of training across multiple weeks, divided into the following phases:

  • Foundational Training: Orientation and basic training in fire service, firefighter safety, and communication.
  • Skill Development: Students focus on critical firefighting techniques including ladder operations, rope handling, and fire hose management.
  • Advanced Operations: Fire streams, ventilation techniques, forcible entry, and rescue skills are taught with a focus on real-world applications.
  • Hazardous Materials (Haz-Mat): Comprehensive training on recognizing, handling, and responding to hazardous materials, which is integrated throughout the course.
  • Live Fire Training: A key component of the academy is an immersive burn week, where students practice in controlled fire environments, including night burns.
  • Final Review and Certification: The program culminates in a comprehensive review, followed by the state certification exam.

Students start with foundational topics such as fire service principles, safety, and communication, then advance through modules on building construction, fire dynamics, and hazardous materials. Each week builds on the previous one, focusing on specific skills like personal protective equipment (PPE), ropes and knots, and ground ladders. Practical tests and evaluations are conducted regularly to ensure proficiency.

As the course progresses, participants undergo advanced training in fire operations, ventilation, rescue techniques, Haz-Mat response, and incident command. The final weeks of the program involve hands-on exercises such as burn drills to give students practical experience in realistic settings. Upon completion, students are well-prepared for a career in fire protection, meeting the Texas Commission on Fire Protection’s requirements for state certification.
